Rod and I spoke on Monday.
It is Thursday, and I have made very little progress. Granted, I have been busy on some client projects, but I need to set and meet goals for this endeavor as well. As usual, the urgent is eclipsing the important. This cannot happen unless the CEO (Me) let's it happen.
On Monday we discussed Step 1 - Value Proposition. I have a website (www.smallcompanycto.com) that I think lays this out very well. I also have a new elevator pitch that I tried out at The Breakfast Club of NJ (www.thebreakfastclubnj.com) this past Saturday. The next task is to convert these materials into a one-page summary that I can use in my networking. Rod is open to my either leading with a phone call, or leading with a summary e-mail to be followed up with a phone call, if that gets results. I am more comfortable leading with e-mail, but am not sanguine about getting a lot of replies, even from people who know me well. We'll see.
Once I have the summary, it will be the centerpiece of a concerted networking drive aimed at gathering intelligence from my contacts on any number of issues targeted at the expertise of the individual. These might include the viability of my business model, the market for the value proposition I am projecting, or ideas to market my wares. The first wave will be CEOs and CFOs who are one or two hops away by LinkedIn. I proposed just including a link to my website, but Rod nixed this as being an extra step that I'm asking my contact to take. The more work they have to do to help me, the less likely that is to happen.
Now to bang out that summary.
